Announcing my Blog Network

30 May, 2006 (07:04) | General Information, Increasing Website Traffic, Starting a Blog Network | By: Erik

Sound the trumpets, I’m finally practicing what I preach and just going for it.

I have been working on my own little blog network space on the web for about 2 months now. I guess you could say that I have had somewhat of a network for a while now, with this blog Aloha Update and Sprint Rants. Those are still going strong but too them I have added 6 more blogs on various topics from sports to Hollywood. None of the topics are groundbreaking, just interests of mine to get the network jump started.

I will post a little bit about each of them here over the next week or so but want to give all of my regular visitors a chance to check out each of them before I do all that writing. Feel free to subscribe to feeds, let me know what you think, and spread the word if you feel someone would be interested in or benefit from any of the writing.

And the blogs are…

Blogging on Empty - helpful hints on how to blog like a pro on little time
Getting to Scratch - tips for golfers chasing the dream, as well as golf news and a general resource
Wicked Backhand - who doesn’t want a gorgeous backhand, a tennis resource for players and enthusiasts
Financing Wealth - financial tips and motivation to realize your financial dreams and find the wealth you’ve been looking for
Rumor Patrol - chasing down all of Hollywood’s rumors from several sources online
Fueling the World - a resource for alternative energy news, follow the changing laws, technology, and breakthroughs

I hope you find some of them enjoyable. If you feel like you would be able to contribute some good articles to one or more of these feel free to contact me about writing for them as guest bloggers. Guest blogging is a great way to promote yourself outside of your own blog world. I have found that it’s like free (well you have to write) promotion to a whole new audience that you didn’t work at trying to attract. Let me know if that interests you.

One last thing, I don’t really have a name for the network, I couldn’t come up with anything catchy like B5media or weblogs inc so erik’s blog network will be where it stays until I, or someone like you (hint hint) comes up with a better name. :)

Blogging for 6 Months

25 May, 2006 (10:35) | General Information, Increasing Website Traffic | By: Erik

I have officially been blogging for more than 6 months. I have learned a lot about the online world and have basically become attached to my computer during any free time I have. I took the immersion approach to learning about online publishing and marketing and somehow have stuck it out. If you have been with me here since the beginning you’ve read several times about my ability to get really excited about things then not finishing them. It’s really what this blog has been developed for. To keep me accountable for my goals.

Back on November 12th, 2005, spurred by Steve Pavlina and his amazing statistics both traffic and monetary I decided to start my own blog. It has been a fun and interesting road and I don’t plan on stopping or slowing down. While I haven’t had the traffic success nor the money success like Steve, I have learned a lot about the online world and what opportunities to find financial freedom there are on the internet. More or less infinite.

I average about 35 unique visitors a day, sometimes 25, sometimes 55, and have at most 43 people subscribed to my feed at any given time. This is really just a drop in the bucket when you look at some of the top blogs. But then again I’ve only been here for 6 months and 43 subscribers, when compared to similar blogs, is good numbers. I have yet to find a great niche following but am hoping my “appeal to the masses” technique will produce results.

Sure most blogs are focused on one niche or another, and most “how-to” articles say find a niche, but I’m opting to try for something a bit different and enjoying the road.

I haven’t made much, from the online world but haven’t really focused on it either. Now that I have what I would call a good base built up with my internet skills I plan on focusing on the monetization of my websites and hopefully building an income from them.

What I’ve Learned

I’ve learned much too much over the past six months to put it all into one post but I can offer a few insights into the two main things I have found bloggers have trouble with.

1. Consistent Posting

The key to consistent posting is to just post. I know that sounds to simplified but the worst thing for posting productivity I find myself engaging in is the dreaded this post isn’t good enough routine. You know the feeling. You read pillar articles by successful bloggers and then compare each and every sentence you write to those articles.

The thing is, if you look back, way back, back to the first six months of most successful blogs you will find stumbling posts, short post, unedited posts, and just that, posts, posts, posts. You have to experiment with what your readers might like, what your writing style will come to be, and have posts back logged or deleted because they weren’t good enough will bring no traffic to your blog.

Just post it baby!

2. Getting readers

As you can see from my numbers I have issues with this part of the successful blogging equation as well. Although my numbers aren’t super they are seeing improvement on a month to month basis. I have hit kind of a lull since February but I attribute that to my lack of blog promotion. I have been working on several projects and neglecting finding readers.

You need to work on a system that works for you, be it forum posting, commenting, or cold emailing other bloggers, but you need to focus at least 20 minutes a day for the first 3 months of your blog promotional period to hard core promoting.

Get out there and promote!

I hope you all are finding my posts helpful. Feel free to spread the word about my blog and blogging endeavours. Maybe someone you know would benefit from reading about how someone else is trying to do it all with a full-time job.

Text-Link-Ads Added to Site

19 May, 2006 (12:54) | My Internet Revenue | By: Erik

In an effort to increase the revenue and test out some new streams of income I have decided to add Text-Link-Ads to my site. My traffic numbers have been steadily rising and I have read some pretty good reviews as of late for Text-Link-Ads that peaked my interest in the service.

Currently my text-link-ads are located just below the ADD FEED TO section of my sidebar and they are located on every page. It’s a pretty good spot that I hope will attract a few buyers a month.

For those of you who don’t know, Text-Link-Ads is a service which brokers the sale of links on your site. They give you 50% of the income generated from your site directly tell you a range of what links on your site will go for. They have a large database of advertisers they promote your site to which is something a lot of individuals don’t have access to.

They also allow the common folks, like you and I, to buy links from sites by browsing their listings. The site information is provided along with ranking information and the price for the link.

Best of all, the only thing that shows up on your web page is the link title. There isn’t some gaudy border or extra names promoting text-link-ads, just the link. Check ‘em out if you’re looking for an added stream of income for your sites.

Another Source of Income

18 May, 2006 (12:29) | Domain Name Investing | By: Erik

Cesar over at Flee The Cube has posted some early results from is domaining endeavours. He began acquiring names about 6 months ago and has stuck with the ups and downs of the business to produce some good results. He bought a lot of names, some as spelling mistake whims, some from forums and has recently switched parking services which boosted his returns and finally got a payout from his efforts.

Now as I said he has been through the ups and downs of the business, buying names that didn’t pan out, paying a premium for an existing name with traffic and loading up his portfolio of domains just to learn from the experience. As you can see it’s paying off for him. A word of caution though, it takes time, money, and some good ideas for words or phrases (harder than you think), but as you can see Cesar has done this an is reaping the rewards.

I previously wrote about domaining and what domain state is when I had thoughts of jumping into this form of online income source. I never really followed through with it because you need to get really lucky or invest a lot of time and money into the process of learning what works. I didn’t have a lot of money (still don’t) and seem to never have enough time for everything I want to do.

The basic gist of it is you own domain names that people more than likely type in to their web browser cold turkey. These can be misspelled domain names or popular words (like candy.com or cellphones.com) and then have a service park ads on that domain that you get payed a percentage of when people click through. The great thing about parking domain names is that once you have the names purchased and redirect your them to the parking company your choose, you do nothing. Completely passive income.

Now I say that last sentence with caution because I am unsure if people who are hardcore into the domaining business don’t do any promotion of their sites at all, I mean we have all seen them pop up in a Google search result before which is hard enough to do if you have a legitimate content site. But for the most part the income you would generate off of these sites is completely passive.

Reading Cesar’s post has made me re-think what I am doing with all the domains I have. I only have 33 domain names of which I am maintaining sites on 9 of the names, but the remaining 24 could easily be parked so that I make money rather than GoDaddy making the money with their parking.

With that I am going to sign up for a domain parking service and place domain names that I am not currently using with them so that I can try to earn an income from these names. There isn’t any harm in it. Doing so should only take a few minutes and who knows, maybe a few dollars will start rolling in. Every little bit counts, and I have to maximize the assets that I have.

Re-evaluate Your Goals

13 May, 2006 (08:39) | Personal Development | By: Erik

A week after posting my goals for May I have to re-evaluate one of my goals. Not because it was too outrageous and unattainable. Exactly the opposite. I surprised myself swimming this last week which I thought would be one of my toughest goals to reach.

I had set my goal to be able to swim 500 meters straight by the end of the month at Ala Moana Beach Park which is a guarded ocean swimming spot. I haven’t been swimming more than three months (actually swimming like lap style) and the first two months I was lucky to get out once a week and it showed. I still couldn’t swim down and back the length of a pool (100 m) without stopping at both ends to rest.

Then in the last three weeks I decided I needed to buckle down and work at swimming or I was never going to be able to swim well. I started going at lunch and swimming where they have posts marking off 500 meters. At first I could only go about 50 m at a time. I would rest, treading water, and be on my way for another 50 m or so. The second week I extended my initial swim to about 150 meters in a row and then had to do the rest and swim cycle for the remaining 350.

Finally this week on Monday I was able to go 250 meters without stopping and I was ecstatic. It still took me the same amount of time to go the full 500 m but I could feel an improvement. I then swam yesterday at lunch and really surprised myself. I decided I was just going to try and relax and really go for the whole length, and it worked! I made it the full 500 m in just under 12 minutes.

I realize that being able to swim 500 m in a row without stopping isn’t that big of a deal. People swim thousands of meters on end for a couple hours at a time. But I’m psyched. I couldn’t swim more than 20 feet in a row without stopping and now I finally figured out that there really isn’t black magic in swimming. It is possible to become a swimmer.

This has lead me to look at my goal for the month and bump it up a little bit. I now feel as though a reasonable goal is to be able to swim the full 500 m in less than 11 minutes and also be able to swim 1000 m in a row. Now my re-evaluation may be putting my swimming goal out of reach but I feel that with the progress I have made so far there is a possibility of seeing even more improvement in the next two weeks.

As you think about goals you have set and reached, don’t be satisfied with them, extend your goals. Push yourself a little more. Just because you have reached a goal doesn’t mean that’s the end of the road. As you continue to move your goals out in front of you don’t look back at what you’ve accomplished. Keep looking forward to the next milestone and keep trying to realize the next step in your process to get where you want to be. No matter the goal.

Creating Time - Time Management Tips

11 May, 2006 (22:07) | Time Management Tips | By: Erik

One of the greatest difficulties I have found since beginning my quest to try and accomplish so much is finding time. Where do mothers who work, doctors who train for triathlons, and businessmen who run 10 businesses find the time to complete so many tasks within one day, and not go crazy.

Time management is a huge subject in personal development and while I don’t claim to be an expert I would say I am coming into my own on creating time where I thought there was none. I have developed and tried some of my own techniques that may help you out and they may not. You’ll have to use trial and error to see which works best for you but I warn you: you’ll only create more time if you try. Those hoping for a quick fix to making more time for your goals will have to look elsewhere.

Within this post I have a way to create 91 8 hour work days a year just by eliminating 30 minute time wasters here and there. 91 days! That’s a lot of work and a lot of you time available to get goals accomplished.

Why Waste Time Relaxing

Just to clear the air right off the bat, I’m not saying that relaxing is a waste of time, it’s more the how people relax that I can see time being used better. I am unsure how the cultural norm for relaxation became occupying oneself with turning to a vegetative state. Most people, including myself, turn on the TV, lay our heads down, surf the internet, play video games, eat, or stare at the wall and consider that relaxing.

Now I wasn’t around before the advent of television but I can only imagine that prior to TV people didn’t watch flickering boxes or use joysticks to control imaginary people. People might have read, conversed with others, went for a run or walk, learned a new game, learned a new talent. Not sure but I do know there weren’t many sitcoms to keep them busy.

What I am suggesting to you know is to begin by looking at what your “relaxing time” is spent doing. Are you watching TV? Are you just taking a nap? Are you eating when there is no need? List what you do regularly after you wake up and before work, and then once you get home from work. Are you spending a lot of time in front of the television or the computer screen? Sickening isn’t it.

A while back I sat down and looked at the things I was doing to “relax” and found that I could be saving a lot of time and learning a lot of new things, exercise, you name it, just by eliminating some of the useless tasks I was doing.

Wake UP!

Simple yet to the point. Wake up early in the morning. I am not much of a morning person at all but I have figured out a way to create 30 more minutes a day just by waking up early. Now 30 minutes may not seem like a lot, or may not amount to much just by itself but consider this. If you wake up every morning 30 minutes earlier than you currently do you’ll be giving yourself 3 and a half hours a week extra time. That’s 14 hours of extra time a month and with 52 weeks in a year that’s 182 hours a year! That gives you a lot of extra time.

How do you wake up early? Well that’s a matter of personal preference. Some put the alarm in the bathroom so they have to get out of bed, some set multiple alarms. One thing that I’ve found works great is not thinking about having to go to work but thinking about what you are going to do for yourself for 30 minutes. You’ll be more motivated to get up right away rather than pushing the snooze button.

Think about that blogging you’re going to do, that run you’re going to get yourself fit with, that great meal you’re about to prepare, or that correspondence you’re going to catch up on. Whatever it is, think of it as your time and you’ll be more apt and more excited to get up in the morning and start your day a little earlier.

If all else fails throw your alarm in the bathroom and don’t push the snooze. (or get a rooster :))

LESS TV

Watch less TV. It’s simple, think about a 30 minute sitcom that you have a 1 in 3 chance of what you’re about to watch being a re-run and don’t watch it. Sure it’s entertaining, sure you’re relaxing, but why do you have to relax and unwind in front of the television. Couldn’t you be going for a walk or sitting under a tree in the shade reading a book?

Really just sit down and think about what you’re watching. Most people in America come home after work and sit in front of the TV and watch re-runs, Friends, Seinfeld, The Simpson’s, That 70’s Show. Then at night before going to bed it’s the same thing. Maybe through in some Everybody Loves Raymond, and King of Queens and that adds up to 2 or 3 hours of useless television. I say useless because as I said there probably a 30% maybe even more like a 50% with some shows, chance that you’ve seen it already.

Even watching just 1 less show gives you 30 more minutes a day to do what you will with that time. Add that to the 30 minutes we created from waking up a little earlier that gives you 7 hours more a week. That’s 364 hours a year extra. You have now just created 45.5 8 hour work days that can do with whatever you want.

One way good way that I’ve eliminated a lot of TV watching and free’d up some time for myself is to purchase a Tivo. Yup that’s right, I joined the digital revolution and nixed the VCR, which I was never patient enough to set-up. This has allowed me to come home an hour later, still watch all my favorite TV shows, and still finish at the same time I would if I had made it home on time to watch those same shows.

Yes, I could just not watch TV, but how would I stay up to date on what’s going on in the hatch.

I am not sure how much time watching 2 hours worth of TV via Tivo saves but lets consider that there are about 7-12 minutes per half hour of commercials and we have 28 minutes per 2 hours giving us basically another 30 minutes per day, giving us another 182 hours a year which adds up to 546 hours per year with the other hour a day we saved cutting out one re-run sitcom and waking up 30 minutes earlier. That’s 68.25 eight hour work days we just created from 3 activities that don’t take any more time.

(By the way look how you saved 1 hour a day just from TV)

Eat Lunch At Your Desk

For those of you that work a full-time job and are so lucky to be trapped in a cubicle all day long, don’t fear, there are ways you can create time for yourself at work. It may take some self control or a little realization that you don’t need to veg out, spend an hour chatting with friends about what Vanessa said to Joan about your boss, but there are ways you can make a little time for number one without getting in trouble with the man in charge.

As I said, to do this you will need self control but if you pack your lunch already you’re half way there. If you don’t, then start packing your lunch. In some places and depending upon what you eat you may not save much money packing a lunch but you save and even more valuable asset. Your time. By packing a lunch you eliminate the walk to the lunch shop/wagon, the wait for your food, and the walk back. Right there that’s probably 15 to 20 minutes. Maybe even more depending on where you eat. Add to that the time you might spend talking with co-workers about gossip and such and you have another 30 minutes.

This is of course if you allow yourself 1 hour lunches which I realize some people only have 30 minutes to eat lunch in which case you probably already bring your lunch or don’t have time to leave work to eat. In any event, if your particular work situation allows you the above scenario, presto 30 more minutes a day, another 182 hours a year, bringing our grand total to 728 hours for the year and 91 eight hour work days. That’s a lot of work days.

Make the Most of Your Time

I bet I know what you’re saying “but that’s 30 minutes here and 30 minutes there, what can I do in 30 minutes?” Well 30 minutes is a lot of time and I’m going to give you plenty of things you can do in 30 minutes.

For starters take the time you wake up in the morning. 30 minutes, not a lot of time right. Wrong. If you don’t eat breakfast that 30 minutes is a good time to start eating a healthy first meal. It gets your metabolism started and really gets your day off to a good start. I wasn’t much of a breakfast eater prior to getting up earlier and wasn’t much of a morning person either. Once I started having a good bite to eat when I woke up I started feeling a little perkier and liking the mornings a little more. That allowed me to be more productive at work and a little more cheerful with the people around me.

Let’s say you already eat breakfast. Great! You now have 30 minutes to do what you will with. I try the following if I get a little more time: running - a 30 minute run can go a long way, write some emails or pay some bills - catching up on email is something I know all people need to do, read a book or newspaper, learn an instrument - 30 minutes on the guitar everyday and you’ll be jamming with Dave in no time, lift weights - 30 minutes non-stop is great cardio and strength conditioning.

Now let’s move onto lunch time. It really depends on where you work and what you have access to that will enable you to maximize your time. I try and read a bit at lunch. Not work related reading, personal reading, a financial book, a personal development book, a Dan Brown novel, whatever you can manage in bits and pieces.

I am lucky enough to work a block from the ocean and can swim or surf during lunch and still get in a few minutes of lunch to eat whatever I packed. That’s allows me to complete some of the goals I set for myself which is a big part of why I search for extra time. You can again always write email, call some friends or family members or learn something new.

Finally onto after work TV watching. Let’s say you eliminate one of the re-run sit-coms you watch after work, and then you Tivo the two hours of must see TV that you watch that can give you 1 hour of straight through time. This way, you’re not having 30 minutes here and there your getting a whole hour to spend doing the things you love.

With 1 hour you can go for a long run, a long bike ride, a long walk, a long swim, play tennis, garden, write all those thank you cards you’ve always wanted, learn an instrument, learn a new game, learn a language, read a book. There are tons of things you can do in an hour and that’s a great way you can combine those meaningless 30 minutes time savers into a full a hour of time saving wonderfulness.

Making Time

In conclusion you should realize that getting 728 hours of extra time doesn’t just fall into your lap. You need to work at it and make it happen. Getting up in the morning is tough, you need to find a way to make that extra time yours. This will motivate you to get up in the morning rather than thinking, not another day for work. You’ll be wanting to get up and might even make more time by getting up even earlier.

Another tough thing to do is break old habits. Old habits like waking up 5 minutes before you’re supposed to leave, or talking to friends during a long lunch break, or even watching your favorite sit-com re-run can be a tough habit to break. It will take self control and some extra time.

The best thing you can do is to remember that what your creating is your time. Your time to accomplish all those things you’ve always wanted to accomplish, all those goals you’ve set for yourself. That language you want to learn those books you’ve wanted to read. The time is yours just get creating it!

Comment Please

3 May, 2006 (16:52) | General Information | By: Erik

It was pointed out to me today that my comments weren’t allowing people to comment on my blog posts. (Thanks Mark from 45n5.com.) I have been wondering for the past 3 months why I haven’t been getting any comments, not even from spam. Nothing in my moderation section on wordpress, and nothing to my email to notify me. Nothing.

Mark was then nice enough to email me to say that he got a thank you for commenting response but the comment never showed up. I checked my “Awaiting Moderation” section and there were no comments awaiting moderation either. I then started to dig through the discussion options section and noticed that I had checked a box marker “Blacklist comments from open and insecure proxies” a while back, it’s way at the bottom, when I was trying to combat all the comment spam that I was getting.

I then asked Mark to kindly give it another try, which he was nice enough to do, and it worked! Not sure if the blacklist comment option was what did it but it sure was good to see a comment show up.

This brings me to asking those of you who read this post to please try and leave a comment, even if it says hey. I am trying to get this fixed but my IP is linked to the administrator and my comments always show up. So I ask you, fellow bloggers, and net surfers alike. Can you leave a comment and if nothing shows up in a few hours to email me at evossman@gmail.com?

Thanks for the help, let’s hope that fixed the problem.

April Earnings Report

2 May, 2006 (14:17) | My Internet Revenue | By: Erik

I received my first affiliate income from an ING Direct Referral this month which boosted earnings. My earnings overall for the month of April are broken down as follows.

Advertising - $9.61
Affiliates - $10

My earnings through advertising are up $2.53 from $7.08 last month and as I mentioned I received and additional $10 from my affiliates. That makes a total increase in online revenue $12.53. I am very pleased with the results even though some may say I spend a lot of time for such little return. I say to them that I am learning a lot about site development, maintenance, advertising, marketing, and improving my writing skills along the way. Sounds like a fair trade-off to make a little money on the side. Most people spend thousands a year in school to receive that type of education.

Others earnings reports that I find interesting are:

$1297.08 in earnings over at $1 a Day
$74.12 in earnings over at The Internet Cashflow Guy
$122 in earnings over at Building my Empire
$172 in earnings over at 45n5
