Obama to Fireside on YouTube

15 November, 2008 (16:15) | Technology | By: Erik

Once again Barack Obama is showing signs of change. This one I can definitely get on board with. Fireside chats, something that every president does once a week since FDR, and have since been put on the radio, has said that he will put his firesides on YouTube.

What a great idea! Informing and leading the general public from a medium that most Americans have access to. I always wondered why previous presidents didn’t put their weekly address, on the television. I’m not talking about press conferences. I’m talking about some sort of weekly address that speaks honestly to the nation.

Maybe they have previously done this on tv. But I haven’t noticed it. YouTube is such a brilliant idea. I’m not sure how it’s comment feature for such showings will go. I can only imagine the comment battles that will go on. Maybe you’ll be limited or maybe they’ll close the comments.

Either way, it’s great to see government coming into the new age. Maybe he can spread the thoughts to other forms of government and we can stop wasting so much money…

This is good news. Also, I heard that Obama is the first President that doing blogging. In my country, our Ex-President does the blogging. Good to hear that the new leader is bringing some changes.

Yeah it’ll be interesting. Also heard that he is on twitter. As blogging has done for so many top executives, it will make Obama, and the presidency seem less like a removed privileged position of power and more like someone for the people by the people.

That is really cool that he is doing that…I’ve never been able to find any of the firesides on the radio so having access to them on youtube will be great. I’m guessing you will be able to go back and view others too.

Very good news. I think that Obama is the right person for this sad worldwide situation. He’s a modern man and we can see this also in this “little” behaviours.

Barack Obama has done a great job leveraging social media and alternative media channels to reach broader audiences and connect with a larger group of people. Just look at his campaign and how successful he was at leveraging non-traditional media channels to spread the word and gain support. It is only natural that he continue this throughout his administration.

Excellent stuff here and I totally agree with you. Seeing Obama put firesides on YouTube is unique and something only a younger president would even think of to do!

It’s really important. One of the most important things a President needs to do is connect with the people, show himself to be on their level and ’stay in touch’. The “fireside chat” concept of the USA should be adopted by other countries. In the UK for example, the Queen speaks to the nation once a year, on Christmas day! Everyone seems to love her though so maybe there’s something to be said for staying scarce…

It was a great concept when he did it, but he hasn’t done that in a while, I’ve been wondering what has happened to that?

Till then,

Jean
