Playing Scratch Golf

Background

I was never too into playing golf. Mostly getting really frustrated through middle school, playing every other summer weekend with a busted set of garage sale clubs with friends who were all better and more into the sport than I. Once I got to high school, after a few break downs on the course, I decided to not take the game as serious as most sports and just have fun. I also ended up playing about 5 times a year.

Through college I played probably twice, one time only making it through about 3 holes before heading back to the lake to play on the water. I didn’t really have the time or money to get out and practice so I figured why play a game you’re not that good at and seems to frustrate 90% of those that play it.

Finally about a year ago after moving to Hawaii where you can play all year long, I regained drive to better my golf game. I purchased a new set of clubs (knock-offs, cheap from online, but new) and began going to the driving range as much as my budget would allow. I played about once every other weekend, bought a book, and began seeing improvements.

Within 8 months I went from shooting in the low 100’s to breaking 90. I felt it was a big step for someone who had never really played much at all in his life. I know feel that with enough practice my game can improve steadily to being able to shoot around par. I realize I will need to play a lot more, which is mainly dependant on my budget and time away from work and other sports but I will continue to work towards the goal of playing scratch golf as best I can.
